For more than 50 years the Bayard law firm has remained one of Delaware's premier law firms.

The firm's philosophy is simple -- assure client satisfaction by providing the highest level of legal representation and service for local, national, and international businesses.

Yet as a smaller firm, its operations have a sense of family.

"Everyone works together toward the greater good, producing the best possible product or service for our clients," said Douglas Hershman, chair of the firm's executive committee. "Our attorneys are accessible and work hand-in-hand with our support staff. We work very hard, but at the same time provide a more relaxed work environment."

That approach helped the firm rank as the fourth-best small business in The News Journal's annual survey, conducted with Workplace Dynamics this year.

"We host informal activities to help provide a more enjoyable workplace, whether it be Wednesday breakfasts, birthday cake celebrations, holiday events and parties, summer family barbecues, fall family festivals or Presidents' Day outings," Hershman said. "We sponsor a personnel club within the office to provide support for our workers in times of need or to provide cheer at times of major life events."

Bayard encourages leadership and collegiality among its workforce, each helping the other to produce their best possible work.

"As a smaller firm we are able to provide flexibility for our employees to handle whatever personal issues arise during the course of the day," Hershman said.

The firm is known for the sophisticated specialization found at larger firms, and accessibility to attorneys, typically found at smaller firms.

Bayard has nationally recognized practices in commercial bankruptcy, corporate and commercial litigation, intellectual property, securitization, structured finance and insurance insolvencies. Other established practices include entity formation, real estate, insurance, tax, estate planning, estate administration and domestic relations. Bayard is the sole Delaware member of Meritas, the largest worldwide association of national and international business law firms.
