Bayard Attorneys Cousins, Kirk, Brauerman, Alberto and Swasey Recognized by Super Lawyers Magazine

Bayard, P.A., a Meritas® member law firm based in Wilmington, Delaware, announced today that five of its lawyers have been recognized by Super Lawyers magazine. Scott D. Cousins and Richard D. Kirk have been recognized as 2015 Delaware Super Lawyers in the practice areas of bankruptcy: business and business litigation, respectively. Stephen B. Brauerman, Justin R. Alberto and Kara M. Swasey have been recognized as 2015 Delaware Rising Stars for their achievements in the areas of intellectual property litigation, creditor/debtor rights, and family law, respectively.

Super Lawyers recognizes only five percent of Delaware attorneys as Delaware Super Lawyers and 2.5 percent of Delaware attorneys as Delaware Rising Stars, as chosen by their peers and through independent research. The Rising Stars list is comprised of attorneys who have been practicing for less than 10 years or are under 40 years old.

Scott D. Cousins is a director at Bayard with more than 20 years of experience in the restructuring field. He has participated in many of the largest and most complicated business reorganizations, liquidations and distressed sales and acquisitions in Delaware’s state and federal courts. He is also experienced in out of court restructurings and workouts. He has appeared in many bankruptcy jurisdictions across the country. In addition to his restructuring expertise during his years in private practice, Scott has wide-ranging experience in commercial transactions as a result of his role as in-house counsel for two large energy-related companies.

Richard D. Kirk is a director at Bayard. He focuses on general business litigation, intellectual property litigation, administrative law, and alternative dispute resolution.  Dick came to practice in an age of generalists, not specialists, and as a result has appeared in virtually all of Delaware’s courts.  He brings with him a career of varied experiences that help shape and inform his work on each new case.  His practice now tends toward the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. In 1993-94, Dick served as the then youngest president of the Delaware State Bar Association, and has served on or chaired numerous bar and court committees and civic organizations.

Stephen B. Brauerman is a director at Bayard. Steve concentrates his practice in the areas of corporate, commercial and intellectual property litigation in Delaware’s state and federal Courts. He has litigated a wide array of cases involving fiduciary duty claims, corporate and alternative entity control disputes, advancement/indemnification, breach of contract, antitrust, securities, patent infringement, copyright infringement, and trademark matters. Steve also counsels clients concerning the General Corporation Law of the State of Delaware and Delaware’s alternative entity statutes. Steve has been recognized as a Rising Star continuously since 2012.

Justin R. Alberto is an associate at Bayard. Justin focuses his practice on corporate bankruptcy and restructuring. He has experience representing debtors, creditors’ committees, equity committees, lenders, bondholders, secured and unsecured creditors, plan administrators, and other interested entities in various bankruptcy reorganization and liquidation proceedings. In addition to his restructuring practice, Justin also has experience representing entities involved in litigation arising under and transactions governed by the General Corporation Law of the State of Delaware. Justin has been recognized as a Delaware Rising Star since 2013.

Kara M. Swasey is an associate at Bayard. She concentrates her practice in the area of family law, including divorce, custody, child support, adoption, guardianship, and protection from abuse. Kara provides litigation support to Bayard’s bankruptcy, corporate, real estate, and commercial law practices. She was also selected as a Delaware Rising Star for family law in 2014.
